It is extremely daunting going into the job market right now. If you just go ahead and start applying for things cold where you don't know anybody, you might put in 100 applications without even hearing anything back. This can be extremely disheartening. I highly recommend LinkedIn and starting to make relationships wherever possible. Offer something that only you can offer to help someone else. Volunteer if you can, involve yourself in organizations and causes that you are interested in. Relationships are where the jobs will come, and if you don't have them right now then I promise you you can make them. I move to the US 10 years ago not knowing anyone or anything and now I run two businesses because I did this.

I left government for museums! Best decision I ever made. But I had to go back to school (at 50, fyi) to get a masters in museum studies. It was scary but worth it. I am lucky because I have a partner who could support our family while I was in school. I realize it is much more difficult otherwise. Seek out mentors. Ask your friends to help you make connections. Join industry networking groups. It's boring advice, but I think it's the right advice. Best of luck to you.
